"The greatest mistake you can make in life is continually fearing that you will make one."
Elbert Hubbard
In this day and age, much of the world is waking up to a new paradigm and embracing a more spiritual path. There are many books and movies available and it is not uncommon now to hear discussions and debates about spirituality in social circles.
One common belief I hear more and more, deals with the topic of synchronicity. It seems to many (including myself) that everything in this universe is somehow connected and that there is some higher order that we don’t always see, yet feel exists. You will hear people say things like “there are no coincidences” or “everything happens for a reason.” I’ve also noted that generally, this statement is made when something new, exciting or good is happening in someone’s life.
But what about when things aren’t going so well? Is it still happening for a reason?
All of us have made decisions in our past that we’re not necessarily proud of. They were “wrong” choices and ones we fear making again. We label them as “mistakes” and tend to hold onto them along with the associated feelings. They can also prevent us from making decisions in the future.
So we begin to look outside ourselves for “the right way” to do life, rather than taking a look inside and identifying the conflicting core beliefs and feelings that we’re experiencing.
In the movie “The Matrix”, Morpheus says to Neo “There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.” In other words, all the books and movies in the world won’t change your life until you begin to “live” what you say you believe.
As Mohandas Gandhi once said, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do, are in harmony.”
Take the word “mistake” for example. If everything is really happening for a reason, then how can anything be a mistake? Either you believe in mistakes OR you believe everything happens for a reason. It is not really possible to live both realities without experiencing conflict (although many seem to be trying.)
Instead of resisting your past or wishing it wasn’t so, try to take a look at the choices you made and learn from them. Identify what you were really feeling at that time and why you chose what you chose. What did you learn about yourself, your perspective and your universe?
If you still find yourself struggling, you can at least remind yourself that if there are no coincidences, then there must be some perfection in these situations. Just because we can’t always see the perfection, doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t there. I suggest to you that reminding yourself of what you believe is what will eventually assist you to see what you believe.
Imagine what your experience of life might be like without fearing mistakes. How might you deal with the troubles in your life if your perspective was one of learning and introspection instead of judgment and blame?
Go forward with a renewed conviction, that there are no mistakes and that each person, event and situation (even the “bad” ones) that you encounter, will always give you an opportunity to explore who you really are and assist you in creating the life you want.
By the way, the next time you are drinking a glass of Coca Cola or eating a chocolate chip cookie, remember that they were invented by mistake. If you like the quote I used and find yourself writing it down on a post-it note, yep, you guessed it, they too were created from what was first called a “mistake.”
